International Women’s Day 2019
The theme of International Women’s Day 2019 is #BalanceforBetter. It’s all about a gender-balanced world that has to be created. It’s not just about women alone, but about the balance we can create all together, no matter where and when. There are some women who are working very hard to create this much needed balance. Check out some of the most inspiring women of the moment below.
Women to learn from
Fashion designer Phoebe Philo has worked for more than a decade at Celine. During these years she hasn’t only changed the fashion industry and developed many trends, but she’s also changed the way women are expected to look in many ways. Philo was one of the first to introduce very feminine, but oversized silhouettes. Something new for her time. She’s been responsible for many ‘liberating’ trends, such as very stylish, but yet unflattering sandals, oversized garments and other comfortable pieces. We can say that Phoebe Philo has created “the new sexy” – which no longer consists of tight clothes and stiletto heels. And we’re very, very thankful for that.
International Women’s Day 2019 is the day of #girlboss Sophia Amoruso. This power woman strives for equality and female entrepreneurship. She’s started with nothing and built up a multi-million dollar company (Nasty Gal, red.), with which she employs many women. She is very strict about the gender-balance within her company and closely monitors potential pay-gaps between her employees. Amoruso is very clear about the fact that no man in her company will ever earn more than a woman in a comparative function. That’s how we like it.
Furthermore, Amoruso likes to give advice. Great advice you want to follow. “Everything you have control over should feed your dreams” is one of the pieces of advice we like. We like the idea that you possess more power than you think. Simply accomplish your dreams by putting all effort to it.
Where Rihanna’s started very innocent with her red hair and lyrics such as “let the bass from the speakers run through ya sneakers”, she is now seen as a feminist, a protagonist of the pop-industry and a true example for many. Power woman Rihanna is an important player of the diversity-game that is currently being played in the fashion industry. With her successful Fenty brands (fashion, lingerie and beauty), she promotes all kinds of women you can think of. No picture perfect for this lady.
On top of this, Rihanna is a true fashion icon herself. Nothing seems to bold. The slogan “it’s ugly until Rihanna wears it” is a widely spread one. From ultra-skinny eye brows to a complete snakeskin outfit – Rihanna pulls it off.
Fashion model Maeva Giani Marshall is a though one. At a young age, this famous model had a stroke, which led to a skin disease. She now has multiple ‘freckles’, which are in fact hyperpigmentation due to the medicines she’s been using. Luckily she’s survived everything and is now fully recovered. As a cherry on the pie, she’s now conquered the fashion industry with her extravagant looks and great appearance and is an example for all of us.
We’re huge fans of the feministic illustrations of Amber Vittoria and therefore she needs to be mentioned on International Women’s Day 2019. With her illustrations, she promotes the ‘true’ female body – including periods, pubic hair, hairy legs and other things that aren’t very regular in today’s media. Amber Vittoria wants to question the ‘ideal physical female’ with her colorful creatures. They simply teach us one lesson: perfection and beauty are in the eye of the beholder.
Fashion model Adwoa Aboah is more than just a pretty and fresh face who entered the fashion industry. Aboah is a model with a mission. When she was younger, she suffered from depression and several drug addictions. When she got back on track and her modeling career went well, she started GurlsTalk: an online forum for girls and women about sexuality, mental health and body image. Furthermore, she wants to be honest about what life is about. It is not always fun and glamorous as you see on Instagram. She hopes to inform young girls about real life and its imperfections, to stay away from the unreal expectations that are set on social media.
P.S: Adwoa Aboah now even has her very own Barbie and it’s simply the best.
Power woman Iris Apfel should be included on our International Women’s Day 2019 list. As the true queen of fashion, this lady is full of good advice and funny one-liners. With statements such as “more is more and less is a bore”, she’s taught us that you can dress and express yourself the way you like. At an age of 96, she proves that there are no limits. Iris Apfel feels better than ever and shows that age is just a number.
