Jean Paul Gaultier

Legend Jean Paul Gaultier recently announced his retirement via this funny video. Gaultier wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t end his career with a bang. And of course he did: check out his legendary final show here.

And as far as we can call his retirement a retirement, his has been very short. Yesterday, the designer announced that – for sake of fashion – Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture line will be continued, each season by a different designer.

Innovative couture

Gaultier’s first guest designer? Chitose Abe – woman behind streetwear label Sacai. On Instagram, Gaultier announced:

“I have the pleasure to announce the new concept for my Haute Couture. Each season, I will invite a designer to interpret the codes of the House and I am doubly pleased that Chitose Abe of @sacaiofficial will be the first one!”

Within the next collections, Gaultier’s vision will be central. However, it’s all about the guest designer’s interpretation. Japanese designer Abe is very flattered. In July, the designer will present her haute couture collection to the rest of the world.

While the use of guest designers might sound very 2020, it actually isn’t. Gaultier explained that he already wanted to do this back in the ’90s. However, he never did. Therefore, he’s very glad that his concept finally comes to life.
