Fashion trends for 2022
While fashion trends come and go, there has been a shift in their expiring date. With the world moving at a slower pace, fashion follows this example. Hence, the newest trends may not feel as new as they are – with the female gaze (this season translated into see-through materials) as the main pillar for many collections.

Female-gaze

Never has the female gaze been more dominant. Sex sells, but according to the current roaring twenties, in an entirely new way. Designers created sexy stunners through the lens of a woman, instead of designs led by the predominantly male gaze. It led to transparent fabrics, cut-outs, short hemlines, and sexy shapes. The main point of difference? These looks are head-turning for anyone – not just lusty men.

The time has come to be out and about again. It was clear that the average creative director felt heavily inspired by the need to go out – almost like calves run into the meadow at the beginning of spring. Therefore, the glitter and glamour were all over, preferably worn from head to toe.

Re-made

With the slowing pace of the past years, fashion houses took the time to rethink their strategies. Part of a future-proof direction must be re-made clothes and upcycled fabrics. Acne Studios and Botter led by example, this time, as well as Vivienne Westwood – who has preached this approach for decades.
Future-proof

What does future-proof fashion look like? Dior had the answer, shown through a collaboration with D-Air Lab. Models walked the runway wearing Dior’s signature New Look, but in a way, no one had ever seen before. Bodywarmers with technical features protected the models’ bodies against the elements, and perhaps even war.

Tailoring 2.0

One of the most important themes of Paris Fashion Week must be tailoring – in a very new, unique way. Every now and then combined with a hint of the dominant female gaze, other times it focused on big shoulders and chunky silhouettes. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and one should definitely go for whatever suits the mood.
Return to the classics

Many fashion houses went back to their heritage: Dior’s New Look, Issey Miyake’s silhouettes, and Saint Laurent’s entire vibe felt similar to collections back in the day. And that isn’t strange: in uncertain times, the past always seemed to be better.
