At September 7, 2019, Christopher John Rogers debuted at New York Fashion Week. While being slightly nervous before and after the show the show (the designer had some concerns whether the clothes not being commercial enough or only being evening), he didn’t realize there was nothing to worry about. Soon he would realize that with this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (CVFF) in his pocket, the world is at his feet.

On November 4th, Rogers received his – well deserved – prize. While being moved, he said: “This is the physical manifestation of the prayers and sacrifices of my forefathers. God, the universe, my family, my team, the judges. Thank you, endlessly.

The jury, consisting of Anna Wintour, Steven Kolb, Joseph Altuzarra, Eva Chen and Diane von Furstenberg, decided unanimously that Rogers deserved this prize most.

Background

The 25-year-old Christopher John Rogers was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Rogers is known for his colorful gowns, worn by many celebrities. His debut at New York Fashion Week was a smashing hit, with a standing ovation after the show. In times of protests, political issues and many questioning the fashion industry in general, Rogers’ show was nothing but a relief.

However, it was his second show (Fall/Winter 2019), when Michelle Obama (with her many others) took note of his potential. Obama, Lizzo and Tracee Ellis Ross wore his creations and proved this designer should be taken seriously. CFDA’s jury noticed it on time to let Rogers be among the CFDA and Vogue Fashion Fund finalists.

Famous fans

Despite his short career, celebrity endorsements haven’t been unfamiliar to Christopher John Rogers. Amongst others, Michelle Obama wore Rogers’ metallic suit and Tracee Ellis Ross lifted one of his gowns to an entire new level.

While elevated by many celebrities, Christopher John Rogers remains calm and down to earth. The designer wants to develop his eponymous brand and elevate his creations. His style is whimsy and playful, yet wearable. Christopher John Rogers still works from his living room, together with a dedicated but small team. While it may sound charming, he does need a proper studio to keep up with his major success.

With this in mind, we can’t tell what this designer is capable of within the next year – including great mentorship and $400,000 to develop his brand. We can’t wait for next season.
