New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2020 has officially kicked-off. We were delighted to keep you posted on the best shows, promising designers and emerging trends. This update: Area, R13 and Chromat.

New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2020
Menswear and womenswear are getting more and more diffuse. We already faced it during Louis Vuitton’s Spring Summer 2020 menswear show, of which we would definitely wear every single piece. As genders fade and fluidity becomes the norm, we expect Fashion Week to change as well. Why do separate menswear and womenswear shows still exist? Many designers ignore ‘the rules’ and do it their own way. For example, Area showed models with glitter beards (we like). But there was moreL Chromat ruled the runway with a very inclusive casting, while R13 uncovered the wild side of spring.
Area
Wow. Designer label Area took us to the dark side of spring. Dutch fashion model Jill Kortleve was one of the lucky (and pretty) faces to open the show. Models were covered in jewelry, that resembled some sort of fetish. Glitter bears, jewelry covering up entire faces and chains attached to garments took the lead. While it felt a bit overdone and not that ready to wear, it was a spectacle to watch. Why should you stick to dull earrings when you can cover up your entire face anyway?
Furthermore, Area showed a new take on chic. From flower-printed blazers to fringed suits: with some small adaptations they would look great at the office. When we thought the looks would doze off, a black model wearing a lilac bodysuit entered the runway, followed by a few other fringy looks. Never expect a dull moment at Area.

R13
With their New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2020 show, R13 taught us that both animal prints and bucket hats are here to stay. Designer Chris Leba used these prints and garments in an original way, though. Animal prints were combined with checks and stripes. Layered and deconstructed garments covered up some of the bare skin.
Despite the models looked a bit sad and grungy, we instantly got a summer feeling. Overall, the creations were cleverly made, but won’t lead to any new trends. This is refreshing in a time in which trends replace each other every week.

Chromat
Chromat entered an entire new chapter. They stopped selling via wholesale channels and from now on entirely focus on their direct channels. This leads to a drop in retail price, with pieces for less than 200 euros. As they claim themselves, they wanted to become more transparent, while keeping the prices low:
“At #Chromat we value ethical production and high quality sustainable materials- two major factors that affect our price point. The other factor is our wholesale markup, so the pieces can be available in places like Nordstrom and Barneys.
Since we did not want to sacrifice ethical production at our factories in NYC and the EU or forgo our focus on sustainability, we decided that cutting out the wholesale markup was the best way to ensure the price of our garments could be more accessible. This has allowed us to lower our retail price point so most swim suits and sets are available for under $200- starting now!”
With their New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2020 collection, Chromat celebrated its 10th anniversary. We can say it was a great party. Together with their birthday, they celebrated models in all forms, shapes and sizes. Models walked the runway in high tech bathing suits with complex looking compositions. Velvet and shiny materials alternated between outfits and we saw a lot of aqua blue.
