Jil Sander SS19 Milan Fashion Week

Jil Sander SS19 Milan Fashion Week – a minimalistic and marvellous show

Jil Sander SS19 Milan Fashion Week – Jil Sander’s spring 2019 finished just a few hours ago and it was marvellous. Just like we are used to from the amazing designer. Or, correctly stated, designers: husband-and-wife Luke and Lucie Meier run the business together as Creative Directors since 2017. Read everything about the designers and the Jil Sander SS19 Milan Fashion Week show below.

Luke and Lucie Meier – the creative couple

Lucie’s mother is a big Jil Sander fan as long as Lucie can remember. She always used to buy Jil Sander garments when Lucie was young and therefore it was Lucie’s first connection to fashion. Before her title at Jil Sander, she has been the head designer for Dior, after working at Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga.

Luke has quite a different background, namely as the head designer for Supreme and as the co-founder of OAMC – a brand that focuses on modern menswear with both a high sense of functionality and street wear influences. Quite an impressive couple, don’t you think?

Jil Sander

Since its establishment by the German Jil Sander, the namesake brand is known for its minimalistic and chic garments, perfect snits and high quality fabrics. According to the designers, clothes have to live with you. They have to serve you. It doesn’t hold on to the clichés around minimalism: the brand is warm, feminine and human. Furthermore, all unnecessary elements are eliminated. Looking at the used fabrics and the individual garments, the brand is full of contrasts, mixes, but overall it is balanced and gives a sense of calmness.

Jil Sander SS19 Milan Fashion Week

This sense of calmness was present during Milan Fashion Week. The Jil Sander SS19 show was majestic and minimalistic at the same time. Both Luke and Lucie Meier know how to create this state. Think of mono-colored outfits, bold mixtures of very different fabrics and decadent knits. Until now Jil Sander has been very good at predicting trends without being trends – let’s call it a sense of being and acting. In line with that: shall we all carry our bags upside down next summer? We guess so.

JIL SANDER: The @jilsander woman gravitates towards clothes rooted in a monastic minimalism. This this season husband and wife designers @meierlucie and @lukemeier16 added the functionality of uniforms into that pared down mix. The opening look, a leather tunic and wide trousers in soft, chewing gum coloured leather, had the look of a set of upscale medical scrubs. Oversize shirts, of the sort that a UPS delivery driver might wear, featured strongly and looked fresh when paired with floppy pleated cotton skirts and wooden soles platforms. And for the practically minded minimalist (the kind of woman who wields power tools with confidence) a chic navy cotton boiler suit was just the thing. There were moments of prettiness too with lean cotton crochet tunics worn over floppy trousers. Add a giant comical shopper and you have the look.
