Once again, Demna Gvasalia proves to be the king of couture

Today, Demna Gvasalia presented his second haute couture collection for Balenciaga. Leaving the crowd (and the internet!) star-struck, one should almost forget to keep an eye on the clothes as well. Elevated craftsmanship, enormous gowns, and advanced technology took the lead, as well as Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, and Dua Lipa, of course. Balenciaga haute couture fall/winter 2022-2023

Bella! Kim! Nicole! Naomi! Just a couple of Balenciaga’s amazing cast for the house’s 51st haute couture collection. The collection draws on and further develops the Balenciaga legacy using advanced technology and traditional techniques. Collaborations with artisans and industrial design visionaries lend another layer of technical craftsmanship and technological innovation. Gvasalia knows how to pay homage to the master himself, like no other: Japanese limestone-based neoprene is introduced to the Couture vocabulary as a modern version of Gazar, the fabric invented for Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The audience kept its breath when Dua Lipa entered the room, wearing a bright yellow gown. Next star in line? Bella Hadid – the hottest model of the moment. But that’s not all: soon Nicole Kidman (!) in dazzling silver follows. There’s only one big name missing front row, while North West and Kris Jenner are carefully watching the spectacle from behind their shield sunglasses. And then, Kim Kardashian enters the space, wearing a shiny bodycon dress. If that’s not enough, Naomi Campbell follows in an overly dramatic ensemble. As usual, a bride closes the show. Her stumbling (the down features an enormous hoop) adds a human touch to the show.

Overall, the collection felt modern yet classic and relevant; typically Balenciaga under the helm of Gvasalia. And once again, Gvasalia proves to be the king of couture.
